25 Years Ago Today: Nov. 27, 1989

November 27, 2014

pwpaperHappy Thanksgiving, everyone! It was exactly 25 years ago today – Nov. 27, 1989 — that I turned in a paper to my Black History professor at Vanderbilt focusing on a former Commodore basketball player named Perry Wallace. Thank you to Prof. Yollette Jones for encouraging me to pursue a project that I was as interested in as a sophomore college kid as I am today.  And to Perry Wallace for putting up with me for a quarter-century!

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
