I’ve waited 44 years for this book. I played major college hoops in those same years. Perry and Godrey’s stories and the variations there on are the most important stories of my life. I was in a conference to the north and I studied every Vandy box score and wondered.
Andrew, I’m sure you have been astounded by the response to your achievement. Thank you, thank you, thank you

Mr. Atkinson: Thank so much for your kind note! I’m so happy to hear your comments. Yes, the reaction to the book has been quite gratifying. Where did you play basketball?

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
