Legendary sportswriter Wendy Parker reviewed Strong Inside in the wake of the controversy at the University of Missouri, where football players threatened to strike unless the university president resigned. Writing of the difficulties Wallace faced, the lack of support he received, and the challenges he faced in the years after making SEC history, Parker writes: “The vestiges of Jim Crow are far from being expunged in America. But Wallace’s example during a time of serious racial strife serves as a reminder that there are no safe spaces or trigger warnings to protect young people of all backgrounds from the hostile adult world that awaits them.” Read her full review here.
Wallace has also weighed in on the Missouri situation, writing: “It is regrettable that we continue to experience the same sad problems on our college campuses that some of us wrestled with decades ago. But doing nothing and evading real and pressing issues is a sure-fire way of ensuring that they don’t go away–or get worse. Yet I must commend the University of Missouri for taking action, albeit under great economic and public-relations pressure. If the university’s leaders are smart, they will commit themselves to a sincere, sustained effort to bring about change.”
