All-School Read at VU & MBA

January 26, 2016

Perry_Wallace_Nicholas_Zeppos_fiDoes anyone in big data track these kinds of things? The highest concentration of Strong Inside readers in any geographical area will have to be the two miles of Nashville’s West End Avenue that connect Vanderbilt University and Montgomery Bell Academy. Over the last week, both MBA and Vanderbilt announced all-school reads – as the school-wide read at MBA (800 boys in grades 7 to 12) and as the “Commons Reading” at Vanderbilt, with all 1,600 incoming freshmen members of the Class of 2020 assigned to read the book before they arrive on campus. It’s a big thrill to have so many students reading about Perry Wallace, and I hope that other high schools and colleges will follow suit! Here’s an article about the Vanderbilt selection.

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
