Dole Institute of Politics

December 10, 2016

14718639_10154661582732743_4838078165703322837_nI had the opportunity to travel to Lawrence, Kansas to speak about STRONG INSIDE at the nationally renowned Dole Institute of Politics. This fabulous museum and archives functions much like a presidential library, and director Bill Lacy puts on a regular series of public events. Here’s a recording of the session. Making my first trip to Lawrence extra-special was the fact that my great-grandfather, Andrew Cummins, was on the track team at KU in the early 1900s. His coach? None other than Dr. James Naismith, inventor of basketball.

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
