The “Bacon on the Bookshelf” Review

November 11, 2014

coverNashville’s Jennifer Puryear reviews Strong Inside on her popular “Bacon on the Bookshelf” blog. Jennifer writes that Strong Inside “feels like a very honest kind of history,” and leads her post with Perry Wallace’s courageous words to the Tennessean from March, 1970, when he talked to the newspaper about the true nature of his difficult pioneering stint. Wallace’s words were controversial at the time and I’m eager to see how reintroducing them into the discourse in Nashville will play out!

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
