East Side Storytellin’

March 13, 2015

image1On March 4, I had the opportunity to take part in one of the most interesting author series’ around, the “East Side Storytellin'” event put on by Unbound Arts, East Side Story bookstore, Riverwood Mansion, and 8 Lavender Lane catering. Twice monthly, host Chuck Beard pairs an author and musician — thankfully, Marshall Chapman did all the singing at our event, while I read from Strong Inside. Here’s Chuck’s marvelously detailed and creative recap of the night, along with audio clips of the reading and music.

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
