Author Jeff Pearlman’s weekly Quaz Q&A is one of the most interesting things online. He finds interesting guests, asks them a series of thought-provoking questions, and shares the results with the world. This week, he talks to Perry Wallace about his days as the first black basketball player in the SEC, the events in Ferguson, MO, and the merits of apple cranberry oatmeal. Check it out here.
William Bill Gaffney says
Vanderbilt 64. My wife and I went to Athens GA. in 1968 to see Vanderbilt and Mr. Wallace play against
Georgia. I had recently been released from the United States Marine Corps after my tour of duty.
My wife and I moved to ATL. GA. in 67. I cannot express in words the terrible treatment Mr. Wallace
endured from the moment he walked on the gym floor till he walked off the floor. Constant, non-stop
verbal abuse. “LEROY” for some reason was one of the less offensive words used. He kept his cool
however I ,to my wife’s embarrassment did not. I felt at the time and to this day that I let Mr. Wallace
down!
