Where does his inter-strength come from? Is he a man of faith? His story is incredible and usually there’s another story behind the strength, fortitude and determination, but nothing was mentioned about this in the trailer. Is this covered in the book?

Yes, he came from a family where faith was important. His mother would tell him to “put on the full armor of God” and that would protect him. He was also a student of black history and sports pioneers such as Jackie Robinson and knew he could not quit, no matter the circumstances. Thank you for your comments!

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
