A New Generation

March 16, 2014

bannerI took my 3-year-old daughter to a Vanderbilt baseball game this past weekend and spent most of the game inside Memorial Gym, where outfield ticket-holders are directed for concessions and restrooms (both of which were apparently a lot more fun for her than the ballgame). On one of our many treks to the Gym, Eliza discovered that one of the doors leading from the concourse to the interior of the arena was open, and she scampered down the bleachers to the front of the balcony. And what was directly above her head? The banner honoring Perry Wallace’s retired #25.

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
