Sports Illustrated Excerpt

December 13, 2014

sireviewRead the Sports Illustrated excerpt from Strong Inside here. SI.com features a passage from the book describing Perry Wallace’s first game at Ole Miss, the first time an African American varsity basketball player had ever taken the court in Oxford. It was an ordeal Wallace later described as a “long, hellish trauma,” but one that also came with a triumphant conclusion of sorts. While the excerpt runs online only, the Dec. 15 issue of Sports Illustrated (the “Sportsman of the Year” issue) also features a brief review of Strong Inside, praising the book as bringing “to life the Civil Rights struggle in gripping, personal detail.”

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
