Vanderbilt Honors Perry Wallace

December 5, 2014

FullSizeRender (13)There were many memorable moments from Perry Wallace’s return to Nashville this week, and one of the most gratifying was the warm welcome and thunderous standing ovation Wallace received at halftime of the game vs. Baylor last night. For those familiar with the circumstances of Wallace’s departure from Vanderbilt and Nashville in 1970 and the distance that existed for decades, it was quite poignant. Among other things, Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams announced the creation of the Perry Wallace Courage Award, which will be given annually to a Commodore student-athlete.

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
