VU Student Newspaper Profile

February 28, 2015

Hustler_logo_2014-585x211I spent most of my time outside of class at Vanderbilt 20+ years ago at the student newspaper, The Hustler, so it was a “full circle” moment to be interviewed by current Hustler reporter Anna Butrico for an article for the paper. Her story noted that Strong Inside appears on the New York Times bestseller list in the “civil rights” category along with “The New Jim Crow” by fellow Vanderbilt alum Michelle Alexander.

  • “In a magnificently reported, nuanced
but raw account of basketball and racism in the South during the 1960s, Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Perry Wallace’s struggle, loneliness, perseverance and eventual self-realization. A rare story about physical and intellectual courage that is both shocking and triumphant. ”

Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor and author
